Tourism Task Force | The Future of Travel: Positioning BC to Accelerate Recovery and Growth

On September 18, 2020, the BC Government appointed eleven business and industry leaders to a Tourism Task Force, focused on identifying actions to help support B.C.’s tourism businesses and workers impacted  by the global COVID-19 pandemic and put the sector on a path to sustainable recovery and growth.

Government has allocated $50 million to implement actions that arise from the task force’s final report, due on Dec. 31, 2020. Recommendations will focus on strategies and actions to help address short-term challenges through the 2021 tourism season, while also considering what changes could be made to enhance British Columbia’s long-term competitiveness. Topic #5: Leveraging Technology to Pivot Your Business
In response to COVID-19, businesses are leveraging technology to amend or introduce new online services and experiences in order to generate revenue and reach new audiences while their capacity to welcome visitors on-site is reduced. This session explores examples of tourism business innovations using technology to evolve business models, visitor services and experiences. David Gonella will kick start the Ideas Lab conversation, sharing how the Roots and Blues Festival has leveraged technology to pivot its business and drive new revenue and benefits for the organization.

Topic #6: Creating Revenue Diversification Opportunities
In response to COVID-19, businesses are having to be creative in diversifying their services and offers in order to generate new sources of sustainable revenue and evolve their business models. In this session, Eleanor Stacey will kick start the Ideas Lab conversation, sharing how the Civic Theatre is diversifying revenue to pivot its business and drive new revenue and benefits for the organization

Topic #7: Evolving the Meetings & Events Experience
COVID-19 has had an enormous impact on the meetings and events sector, requiring organizations to rethink their strategic and operational approaches to delivery. In this session explores how businesses in the meetings and event sector are evolving revenue generation models, delivery and experiences. Judy Kucharuk will kick start the Ideas Lab conversation, sharing how the Encana Events Centre in Dawson Creek has evolved and pivoted its business to drive new revenue and evolve the events experience for a sustainable future.

The BC Tourism Resiliency Network is a long-term resiliency program providing BC tourism businesses with meaningful, one-on-one support to navigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, adapt and work towards eventual recovery.

Small and medium-sized businesses are vital to British Columbia’s economy. The Small and Medium-Sized Business Recovery Grant program provides fully-funded grants to businesses to ensure they have the support they need during and beyond COVID-19.

The program runs until March 31, 2021 or until the funds are fully allocated, whichever comes first.Please reach out to your Tourism Resiliency Program Advisor for more information or assistance.

 


Measuring Canadian Travel Patterns

The Cariboo Chilcotin Coast saw a 51% increase in visitation over British Columbia during Week 39 (October 19-25). Visitation to the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast increased by 45% and British Columbia decreased by 2% when comparing Week 38 (October 19 – 25) to Week 39 (October 26 – November 1).

In 2019, our consumer website landwithoutlimits.com generated over 30,000+ referrals to tourism stakeholders. In September, we generated over 5730+ outbound referrals to businesses and resources listed on our site.

Respecting the short lead time for fall bookings many of our businesses have shared with us, our marketing team is extending fall promotions until October 13th to squeeze out the final round of last-minute vacations. After October 13th, our team transitions to promoting shoulder season offerings and targeted campaigns promoting next season.

Global + CTV Television Campaign Wraps Up

Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism ran 15 & 30-second commercials on both Global and CTV from July 6th to September 27th. The campaign was meant to appeal to British Columbians’ desire for uncrowded, quiet and calm vacation alternatives this season. The commercials also sought to blend all the elements that speak to the endless offerings of the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast region and our land without limits brand.

Stakeholder Website Refresh Project Ends Soon

Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism was grateful to receive funds under a previous intake of the Rural Dividend Fund to conduct various projects that improved the digital literacy of our tourism businesses. One of those projects was providing FREE templated websites for businesses that lacked or needed an overhaul to their web presence.

To date, we have been able to provide new websites for businesses such as Fox Mountain Brewing, Imperial Motel, Soda Creek Sweetcorn, and Morehead Lake Cabins.
