AS A BUSINESS PROVIDING AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE, WHAT KIND OF LIABILITIES DO I FACE?
The provincial government has announced measures to protect people and businesses providing essentials service by issuing an order stating that a business providing an essential service cannot be held liable for damages caused by exposure to COVID-19 while continuing to operate, as long as they are complying with orders from the provincial health officer and other authorities. WHAT SPECIFIC ORDERS AND GUIDANCE ARE AVAILABLE FOR MY BUSINESS?
The Ministry of Health has issued a number of guidance documents for specific sectors. All businesses should make sure they are operating in accordance with any current directive from the Provincial Health Office and their local Health Authority.
WorkSafeBC recognizes the importance of worker safety as businesses look to resume operations following COVID-19 related work stoppages or interruptions. The following materials provide employers with information and resources to assist them in ensuring the risk of exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19 is minimized at their workplace. Employers are required to develop a COVID-19 Safety Plan that outlines the policies, guidelines, and procedures they have put in place to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. This plan follows the six steps outlined below. Employers must involve frontline workers, joint health and safety committees, and supervisors in identifying protocols for their workplace. You do not need a formal plan in place to begin operation, but are expected to develop it while protecting the safety of your workers.
WORKSAFEBC ACCOMMODATION: PROTOCOLS FOR RETURNING TO OPERATION
The following protocols offer guidance for the accommodation industry, including hotels, motels, backcountry operators, lodges, RV parks, cabins, and hostels. These employers may also benefit from reviewing protocols related to office space, food and drink services, retail services, and parks. Employers must also ensure they are abiding by any orders, notices, or guidance issued by the provincial health officer, and the appropriate health authority, that are relevant to their workplace.
